Stopover at the Chemnitzer LinuxTage

Only a few days left until Chemnitzer Linuxtage open their gates. It's one of the biggest Linux and Free Software events in Germany -- maybe in whole Europe. The event mainly focuses on Free Software, the community aroundt it, and people doing great stuff with it.

There will be many users and developers giving talks and workshops, and of course some businesses, too. This is a good chance to get in contact with people involved in and behind your project or get in touch with new ideas and techniques. We'll be around there, too and share our experiences and get new impulses: we'd be happy to seeyou during our talks about batou and backy.

Our first talk is about batou on Saturday morning at 9:00am, given by Theuni and me. We present our toolkit for automating web application deployments. We'll give a short introduction into the concepts behind batou as well as some examples on how you can integrate it into your daily development and deployment process. This is the chance to see batou in action or ask questions, you always wanted to ask.

The second talk will be right before lunch break at Sunday 1pm. Christian Kauhaus will present backy, the backup software we are using and maintaining to ensure all of our VMs are being backed up properly. backy is helpful to us because we re-use features available from other systems in our environment like Ceph for performing snapshots or copy-on-write as offered by btrfs. This allows us to do fast and consistent backups. On big and critical VMs with large disks (500GiB and more) we can even run hourly backups this way. We also profit from fast restore of complete backups and even single file extraction is a breeze. Christian will give you an overview on how backy works and how you can adapt it for your own needs.
